International Year of Volunteers
December 5/10 - December 5/11
Beginning on December 5, 2010, Volunteer Canada will celebrate the UN mandated International Day of Volunteers and the International Year of Volunteers tenth anniversary (IYV+10). The International Year of Volunteers, proclaimed in 2001, was created through Japan's recommendation at the 52nd assembly of the United Nations. Ten years later, the global community comes together once again to recognize volunteers and volunteerism during the IYV+10. Volunteers benefit our communities, take action, and act as the ultimate agents of social change all year round. International Volunteer Day begins a year-long celebration and Volunteer Canada will be leading the charge with adiverse digital marketing campaign and through the development of online resources and tools which will be made available to all Canadians in early 2011.

Canadians have a rich history of volunteering and community involvement. Volunteers are on the front lines of all of our community services - community health care, heritage and arts, maintenance of green space, disaster relief, volunteer firefighting, minor sports - the list is endless. The work of the volunteer is essential. National Volunteer Week (NVW) pays tribute to the millions of Canadian volunteers who donate their time and energy.
December 5, 2010
In 1985, the United Nations General Assembly established International Volunteer Day (IVD) to commemorate the contributions and dedication of volunteers worldwide. Today, IVD is celebrated globally, by volunteers, voluntary organizations and by all those who benefit directly from the endless help of the volunteer.
April 15-17, 2011
Global Youth Service Day is the largest international celebration of youth volunteerism in the world. Every April, millions of young people from more than 120 countries - with the help of mentors, parents, teachers, volunteers and voluntary organizations - mobilize to celebrate and promote the potential and power of the youth volunteer movement.
